Based on a master plan conceived out of respecting natural site topography, Alila’s placement of buildings are staggered and terraced to complement natural slopes and rock outcrops without compromising views. The Jury commends the architects for similarly extending their efforts to the engagement of local villagers and craftsmen and to have adopted building materials and construction techniques that complement local capabilities so that there can be greater social engagement with local resources and community. Through knowledge sharing around material durability, appropriation for large scale application and adapting local aesthetics for modern applications, the project also served as a vehicle to uplift both locale and community. The architects described the journey as enlightening, educational and emotional for all.
